Write-up:
“Facebook is a social networking website where users can post comments, share photographs and post links to news or other interesting content on the web, chat live, and watch short-form video” (Nations). Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, says he created Facebook because he saw that many students and parents lacked a communication service in 2004. When people sign up for a Facebook account, they are required to share their name, gender date of birth, and email or phone number. Following the sign up, Facebook gathers data on all advertisements users click, any additional personal information added to their Facebook profiles, every IP address that users use to login, every friend in the network (even deleted ones), and all user activity. Over the last decade, "facebook has solidified itself as an important tool for staying in touch with those you love, as well as those you met briefly" (Wagner). It has also changed the way we share our lives as "photos, thoughts, favorite videos, movies, and books — what used to be personal is now plastered on your social profile" (Wagner). Although Facebook has improved the way we communicate, people should still be wary of what personal data they share. In 2016, Facebook gave the information of over 50 million users to Cambridge Analytica who made advertisements tailored according to the data to influence votes.
